“Be In Our Corner”

The Southern Maine Boxing Club is an organized, highly supervised, and structured boxing program that provides a safe-haven for youths who are trying to find their place in the world and achieve a positive self-image. We feel that when our youth learn that the community values them, they in turn will feel a sense of belonging and gain interpersonal competence.

The Southern Maine Boxing Club has been struggling for a decade, trying to bring back what was a club with an important mission. It has been a hard fight for us to continue. After the Osher Community Center closed its doors in June of 2005, we were fortunate to relocate our gym in the downtown where we feel we can best serve the youths we are trying to help, Our outstanding volunteers and head coach, Jay Potvin, promised to his now deceased father, Dick Potvin, to continue the program. This promise and our dedication to our mission is what has kept the club alive.

To cover costs for rent, utilities, equipment, and USA Boxing Registration, membership dues are collected each month. Many of the youths cannot afford to pay even a modest dues fee. SMBC does not turn anyone away, and we never refuse anyone because of their inability to pay. This is why we need financial help.

Without financial assistance, Southern Maine Boxing Club may be forced to close its doors once again. We realize that there’s a growing competition for funding, but there are few programs that target the population we help.

Southern Maine Boxing Club asks you to be in our corner for the fight of the youth. Please step up to the ring and help us fight against negative youth activities.
